Whatstandwell Open Gardens 2018
over £500 raised for the Derby Mountain Rescue Team
After weeks of scorching weather, there were concerns this year that gardens would resemble deserts. with previously prized collections having turned to brown and withered plants.
In the event, all our gardeners managed to nurse them along so that on the day there was still plenty of colour and life. Well done! This year’s event had three new gardens open as well as several regulars so our visitors had all on to get round them in the heat. Especially with the tempting additional distractions of plant sales, cakes at the school, tea and scones, performances from our local choir and eukele ensemble, even art exhibits and Well Dressings! A collection of quite remarkable paper sculptures as well as watercolours and feltwork pieces certainly added to the enjoyment of the gardens themselves. It is hoped that the artists concerned might consider presenting again next year!
A big thankyou then to anyone involved in the event. All who helped with the organisation, entertainments and refreshments, all our visitors who chose to spend the afternoon with us rather than in front of the football or the tennis!, and all our gardeners without whom of course there would be no show. Here’s to next year!
